Catch up with all the latest successes at Club, District, Regional and National competitions............. Ham & Gav scoop Pool & Darts awards The club's annual Pool & Darts was held on 22nd February in the Halkirk Youth Club. With Pool favourites Andrew Gunn and Bryan Sinclair knocked out in early rounds, it was young pretender Gavin Swanson who picked up the winning certificate, with John Coghill the man pipped in the final. The 3rd/4th playoff saw Robert Sutherland edge out Ali Miller to take the 3rd prize certificate. It was the same story in the darts, where favourite Roddy Gray was ousted in the 2nd round by Robert Sutherland. However Robert couldn't keep his run going and faltered in the final when he was overcome by fans' favourite Hamish Coghill. Gavin Swanson picked up the 3rd certificate just ahead of Jack Cowan who it must be said seemed to be slightly hindered by his slightly tight rugby top.
The long wait for Junior Quiz Trophy goes on Even home soil could not help the Halkirk Juniors lift the Ulster Trophy for best team at the District Junior Quiz. In a drop of one place from last year, the Halkirk A team were third this year. Alan Macleod, Mark MacDonald and Hamish Coghill were the trio taking the bronze. Also competing but t unplaced were Halkirk B, Alistair Budge, Jamie Gunn and John Coghill. The Halkirk D team put in a great effort but with only 2 members, Cheryl Henderson and Fiona Swanson, their valiant efforts went without reward.
Macleod toppled by Big Mac for Junior Quiz honour The 2006 winner better known as Beeg Al didn't even manage on the podium last night as Mark Macdonald scooped the top honour closely followed by Gavin Swanson in silver and Hamish Coghill in bronze. A good turnout saw 20 members take part in the Junior Quiz. This should ensure plenty of teams for the District Junior Quiz next Tuesday.
Its a Super Sunday for Sinclair Sunday 4th February will go down as Super Sunday for Halkirk YFC due to a triple success. First up was the result of the Member of the Year competition which went to club chairman, Bryan Sinclair. Swiftly following was Bryan taking the Overall Individual title at the District Ten-Pin Bowling competition. To round the day off the Halkirk A team won the Comm Cup for Ten-Pin Bowling which also means qualification to the National Finals later this month. The successful team comprised Ellen Falconer, Carol-Ann Budge, Bryan Sinclair, John Coghill, Willie Budge and Jamie Riddell. Halkirk B also competed well and were very unlucky not to get in the prize list. The B team were Carolyn Coghill, Lorraine Angus, Alistair Budge, Isobel Swanson & John Anderson.
Speechmaking team qualifies for National Finals Halkirk will be represented at the National Senior Speechmaking Finals after the team of Bryan Sinclair (Chairman), Gail Sinclair (Speaker) and David Brewster (Vote of Thanks) qualified from the Regional Eliminations held at the North Region Conference. The celebrations did not end there though as top award in the fancy dress competition went to none other than Angus Mowat, dressed as an Indian chief.

Double disappointment for Halkirk There was a double blow for the Halkirk teams at the District elimination for the Brains of the North competition in Bower Hall. With Halkirk C finishing top after the 1st round and Halkirk A in second, it looked a closed book. However due to only 1 team per club qualifying for he final, Halkirk A were replaced by 3rd placed Bower A. After a dramatic final which saw Halkirk C's Gail Sinclair put up a valiant solo effort in the General Knowledge round, Bower took the Cup. The Halkirk C team comprised Gail, Jacqueline Keith, Aly Miller & John Coghill. The A team was made up of Hamish Coghill, Bryan Sinclair, Dave Brewster & Willie Budge. There were also the following teams taking part:- Halkirk B - John Anderson, Angus Mowat, Marc MacDonald & Kenneth Sutherland - 8th place Halkirk D - Carol-Ann Budge, Isobel Swanson, Ryan Macleod & James Morrison - a credible 10th place
Decade of gold comes to an end at Sheep Dressing After 10 years of glory, Halkirk finally succumbed the District Sheep Dressing Shield at Quoybrae on 28th October. Bower were the winners although maybe a big night on the previous evening did nothing to improve the hopes of the Halkirk faithful. The Club Chairman certainly looked as if he was feeling the exertions of the previous night's entertainment with team-mate David Brewster. The lads were second with Halkirk B, Ally Budge and Dave McCarthy, coming in third. Credit goes to the lads for turning up and putting on a decent show.
Help at hand from former Members Once again the club could call on former members to help out at the Club Sheep Dressing practice. The lambs were supplied by Andrew Swanson, Quarryside and able assistance given to the budding dressers by former National winner, James Allan, Durran Mains. A good turnout meant this was a worthwhile evening with a line - up including Andrew Mowat, James Morrison, Davie Brewster, Bryan Sinclair, Ally Miller, Gavin Swanson, Mark MacDonald, Jack Cowan, John Coghill & Hamish Coghill.

Halkirk B girls were third in the Handicrafts while the Halkirk B lads were fourth. Halkirk B also managed third equal overall with Bower B. Well done to all. The winning team consisted of:- Angela Sutherland, Natalie Blackwood & Jacqueline Budge Alan Gow, Kenneth Sutherland & Bryan Sinclair

This was coupled with Bryan Sinclair grabbing gold in the Tossing the Sheaf and Halkirk A winning the Tug of War. A good turnout plus points picked up at the Hockey and football saw a comfortable 40 point winning margin for Halkirk.

Also playing their part were Louize Louwe, Cheryl Henderson and new member Chloe Bunch. In the lads section it was once again Bronze with the B team coming out on top in the 3rd/4th playoff against the Halkirk A team. After racing into a 5-0 lead, a stunning comeback looked on when the fastest hat-trick in YF Hockey history was scored by the man they call Brewster. Alas it wasn't to be for the A team who were fourth. The victorious B's were made up of Bryan Sinclair, Mark MacDonald, Graeme Gunn, Alistair Budge and John Coghill. The disappointing A's were Andrew Gunn, James Riddell, Gavin Swanson, Hamish Coghill, Dave Brewster and George Coghill.
