Comps weekend story

The February National Competitions Weekend 2007 took place in Thurso on Saturday 24 February to Sunday 25th February. The events taking place were 5 -a-side football, Ten-pin bowling, Senior Speechmaking, National Quiz and Member of the Year. Halkirk had teams competing in the 10 pin bowling and Senior Speechmaking, with club chairman, Bryan Sinclair, representing Halkirk and Caithness District in Member of the Year.

Member of the Year - Bryan Sinclair became National Member of the Year 2007 when he beat off competition from 11 member-of-the-year finalists. Bryan, who has been a member of the club for 10 years, will have the opportunity to represent the SAYFC on a number of occasions, both formally and informally, throughout his year in the post. He will act as an ambassador for the association at home and abroad.

Ten Pin bowling - After some promising practice sessions, Halkirk entered the competition with a wee bit of confidence. Ellen Falconer had hit 184 in a practice session earlier in the week, while Jamie Riddell had got his hands on a new ball. The team consisted of John Coghill, Carol-Ann Budge, Ellen Falconer, Bryan Sinclair, Willie Budge and Jamie Riddell. With a score of 1037, the bronze award was attained.

Senior Speechmaking - The team of Bryan Sinclair (chairman), Gail Sinclair (Speaker) and David Brewster (Vote of thanks) qualified from the North Region. Against a full line-up of 10 teams, Halkirk were not placed but can be proud of their achievements and can look forward to trying again next year.
